CO2 Laser Surgery, Laser Declaws

At The Pet Doctor, we have been using a CO2 surgical laser in our surgery suite for the last 6 years.  There are many benefits to using laser surgery instead of surgery with a traditional scalpel.  The CO2 laser removes tissue with a highly focused infrared beam.  As the laser cuts, it also seals capillaries, small blood vessels, and nerve endings.  This leads to less pain, less swelling, significantly less bleeding and less chance of infection after surgery.

The laser is often used in eyelid procedures, tumor removals, anal gland surgery, and is recommended for many other surgical procedures.

We use our CO2 laser for many different surgeries, but the most common procedure that we use it for is declawing cats.

Declawing cats is a controversial procedure.  At The Pet Doctor, we believe that it is best to avoid this surgery with behavior management whenever possible.  If declawing your cat is the best alternative for your family, we strongly recommend the laser surgery.  There are many benefits in this procedure.  There is significantly less bleeding, so a tourniquet is not necessary as it is in the traditional declaw surgery.  The cats are much more comfortable post surgery and it is much easier to keep them comfortable and pain free.  We can often even send them home the same day with a light dressing on their feet, compared to an overnight hospital stay with the traditional procedure.

We would be glad to consult with you about laser surgery for your pet.
