Blood Donor Requirements
Feline
- 1-8 years of age
- Greater than 10 pounds
- Good temperament
- Females must be spayed and not have had an estrus cycle
- Indoor only
- Must be current on vaccinations (Rabies, FVRCP and Feline Leukemia)
- Negative for vector and non-vector born diseases ( Heartworm, Mycoplasm, Feline Leukemia and FIV)
- Currently not on medication except for heartworm prevention and flea and tick treatment
- No history of chronic medical problems
- No history of prior blood transfusion
Laboratory Test:
Blood typing will be done at the time the first donation is made.
Yearly:
- Canine snap 4Dx
- Complete Blood Cell Count
- Serum Chemistry profile
- Fecal test
- Urinalysis
Prior to Donation:
- PCV/TP
- BMBT
- Blood smear
Additional clotting function test will be preformed if the BMBT is abnormal.
Abnormal results in laboratory test will result in the donor not being able to donate at that time and possibly any time in the future.
Pre-Donation Physical Exam
Each donor will receive a complete physical exam prior to donation, including inspection for external parasites. A detailed history will also be taken on the donor, making sure to note any traveling, boarding and medications that have been given since last donation was made.
