Pets as Holiday Gifts

There is nothing cuter than a new puppy or kitten so it may seem like one would be the perfect holiday present. Think again.
There are many reasons why giving a pet as a present is a bad idea. If you were already planning on getting a new pet for yourself and the rest of your family and you plan on being the primary caregiver, then getting a puppy for the holidays may not be a problem. But please be sure you take these things into consideration before you adopt or purchase a pet that will live with you for many years.
Holidays are hectic. All the noise, guests and chaos are overwhelming to new puppies and kittens. In addition, many people leave for long periods of time during the holidays which is not idea for house-training a new puppy. This coupled with the destructive behaviors that happen when young pets are unsupervised can lead to discontentment or anger at the new pet and often means the pet is re-homed. Cats have difficulty resisting climbing up in the Christmas tree or chewing ribbon and shiny presents look like great thing to chew to some dogs.
Family may not be ready for the responsibility. Whether the pet is meant as a gift for someone outside your household or not, it is important to consider if the gift-receiver is ready for what comes with a new puppy or kitten. You may mean well, but even a parent or other adult may not have the time or energy for a young pet. Likewise, pets should never be given as a gift to a child (unless you plan on being the primary caretaker). Even a teenager is likely to shirk responsibilities for a new puppy or kitten as they require almost constant care. It’s like having a new baby in the house!
Another thing to consider, especially if you’re considering gifting a pet to another family, is that many people choose a pet based on an almost instantaneous bond or draw. It’s kind of a “love-at-first-sight” thing. Sure, most every puppy or kitten is instantly loveable but some people have a preference for breed, sex or even just personality. It’s best to leave the pet choice to the person who is going to ultimately be the owner.
If you still think you want to give a pet as a gift, please consider adopting an adult pet or fostering a pet for the holidays first. Many rescue groups are happy to do an adoption trial as they want to ensure their pets get the best homes possible!
